Modifiers for steel and cast iron
Graphitizing modifiers (ferrosilicobarium FeSiBa) are used for inoculating modification of gray and high-strength cast iron and cast iron with vermicular graphite. They are much more effective than ferrosilicon FeSi75, which is traditionally used for the same purpose. Material consumption when switching to modifiers with barium and strontium can be reduced by 2-3 times.
One of the most common graphitizing modifiers is ferrosilicon with barium FeSi65Ba4, which has a high graphitizing ability, increasing the strength of cast iron by 20-25%.
Barium alloys are more effective than other modifiers for processing cast iron in large capacity ladles when pouring into molds takes a long time.
The main requirements for graphitizing modifiers are:
- elimination of chill in cast iron castings (or structurally free cementite);
- increasing the duration of preservation of the modifying effect, which is very important for large thick-walled castings;
- impact on the distribution and size of inclusions of lamellar graphite and increasing the isotropy of the structure and mechanical properties of cast iron in multi-walled shaped castings of complex configuration.
